Garissa

Overview

Garissa is the unofficial capital of Kenya’s Somali community. Some even argue that a visit is probably the best way to experience the Somali way of life without crossing into Somalia! The home of the rare Rothschild giraffes conserved at the Bour-Algi Giraffe Sanctuary, Garissa also keeps the equally rare long-necked Gerenuk. Wednesdays are especially busy as being a market day. Suddenly the town is rife with herds of cattle, camels, and goats as the pastoralist communities arrive with their priced possessions ready to sell and buy.
