When we started Kenya Geographic, we had an inkling it was going to be a disruptive force in the travel industry in Kenya. Back then we answered to the brand name, Enchanted Landscapes.

A couple of years into our existence and our travel blog, Safiri Kenya, had already received a nomination for BAKE Best Travel Blog Award. We then went by the name Enchanted Landscapes Travelogue,

Three years later we were on a winning streak again when we emerged the winner of the Microsoft Innovation Award for the best innovation in travel.

The innovation awards focus on Kenya’s Vision 2030 which aims to transform the country into a newly industrializing, middle-income nation providing a high quality of life to all its citizens in a clean and secure environment by the year 2030.

The awards have aligned themselves to the three pillars of this vision which are the Economic & Macro Pillar, Political Pillar and Social Pillar. Their shortlists include ideas with the potential to accelerate the achievement of projects within these pillars.

In the same year, we yet again emerged finalists for the coveted Ecotourism Journalist of the Year award run by Ecotourism Kenya which pits giants in the ecotourism arena against each other in a showcase of green initiatives aimed at ensuring Kenya remains a green travel destination of choice.

With the spotlight still shining on us, we realised we were onto something much bigger, grander and hugely transformative. We have since been at this game of showcasing Kenya’s tourism gems a little different from the usual and hugely leveraging on innovation to deliver an unforgettable travel experience for those who interact with our platform.

About a year and a half ago, we dared to dream even bigger. We launched version 3.0 of our website – but kept our ideas! We still shared off-the-beaten-path travel bucket list ideas. But for the first time in the country, we pushed the boundaries. We dared to launch, perhaps, Kenya’s first homegrown Online Travel Agency (OTA). It would become the new home of amazing and unique travel itineraries, accommodation options and airline tickets.

This audacious leap of faith threw us into the highly competitive and hugely tech-heavy arena of online travel booking. Bigwigs like Booking.com, TripAdvisor and Jumia Travel dominate this area.

It has since been a journey of many lessons and exciting discoveries. Throughout, we work smart to carve our niche in a very traditional space. Each day reveals new learning which only builds our resilience. We forge on to offer the first Kenyan OTA built by Kenyans for Kenya.

The International Travel Awards

It was not long before payday came and it came in triplets! A few weeks ago we learnt of our nomination to the prestigious International Travel Awards, our biggest award quest yet.

Our website received triple nominations for Africa’s Best Online Travel Agency, Kenya’s Best Online Travel Agency, and Nairobi Area’s Best Online Travel Agency. Truly, the sky is not the limit as God’s favour continues to make our star shine brighter.
